'Palya' - welcome in Anangu language wonderfully captures the vibe of our 5-day adventure here in the Red Centre. From the moment we stepped off the plane to be greeted by friendly faces and vibrant desert colours we knew this would be an experience to be remembered. Indeed nature's carnival ride of experiences then began, helped along by knowledgeable smiling guides!
'Palya' also reflects the warmth and open heartedness each tour member showed toward each other during this holiday, taking time to listen to each other's stories and supporting and encouraging new friends to venture out of their comfort zones and take on the various activities offered to them.
The Sounds of Silence Dinner set the scene to perfection! To be wined and dined with Uluru to one side and Kata Tjuta to the other under a clear and starry sky.. the stuff of magic! The mornings were early but not to be missed and included breakfast watching the sunrise at Uluru, walks around the base of the rock exploring and learning the stories it holds within its caves and the markings on its rock face, as well as a full day trip to Kings Canyon. Here some took on the challenge of the rim walk whilst others were guided through the geology and fascinating plant life of the creek bed walk. Our indigenous guide Glenn really made this tour an absolute delight .. the ladies loved him, his friendly tone, the way he talked about his aboriginal community and his hugs all around!
The midday heat each day allowed for some rest time with swimming in the lovely Outback Pioneer pool or venturing over to the Gallery in Yulara township.
There was little rest for the wicked though with an afternoon trip out to Kata Tjuta where most braved the heat and walked to the lookout within the gorge and were rewarded with yet more varieties of purple and pale pink wildflowers. set against the iron red of the rocks.
One evening we were taken to the Field of Lights, an amazing light installation set against the backdrop of Uluru. Our Star Pass meant we were greeted with canapes, wine and beer and then wandered through a magical field of coloured lights which gradually emerged as the sun set.
Hard to believe so much could fit into 5 days, but there was more to come with an evening camel ride, a highlight for many of our group. Others amongst us found their wish to stretch their bravery boundaries and chose to do helicopter flights over Uluru, Kata Tjuta and also over Kings Canyon.
We were indeed an adventurous lot, certainly not bound by age as some of the greatest challenges taken on this trip were undertaken by older members, seen especially in their willingness to enjoy the 12 km Uluru base walk which was an iconic experience! There was definitely something for everyone.. no doubt about it. What an absolute treat this tour was with the forming of new bonds and friendships being at the tip-top of our highlight tree!
