We met bright and early on Friday morning to begin our Aussie Outback Adventure. Just a short flight from Melbourne, we were excited to see Uluru from our plane in the red center of this big wide land. Coming in the spirit of fun and friendship, on our first night together dining under the stars, it felt like we’d known each other for a long time. This was the magic of Uluru. We sat at large round tables, eating fine bush tucker food, gazing at the stars while learning from indigenous people’s perspective. Up early again the next morning, we watched the sunrise over Uluru as we had breakfast, listening to the creation stories inspired by the rock. That afternoon we visited Kata Tjuta, formerly known as ‘The Olgas’ made up of 36 domes. Also, a powerful sacred site, Kata Tjuta is the men’s place. We enjoyed taking spectacular photos with vibrant contrasting colors, to keep forever. That evening we went to the spectacular “Field of Lights.” As the sun went down, we had drinks and canapes while watching the thousands of lights come on. What a wonderful way to celebrate Lynda’s birthday! Kings Canyon was the destination for Sunday, a long drive from Uluru, where we had a choice of walks along the sandstone walls and chasms. Most of us opted for the beautiful Creek Bed Walk. The next day was the long anticipated base walk around Uluru. It was 12 kms in total and gave us a close-up experience of the sacred sites, caves, waterholes, and rock art; something we’ll never forget. To top it all off, that evening we rode camels through the desert as the sun set behind Kata Tjuta. What a privilege to ride these majestic creatures as the desert colors changed with the light. Exhilarated and tired, we left the red centre, having shared so many wonderful new experiences with our new friends. The sisters all say they will be back!
