What a welcome we got at Nairobi Airport from our amazing Kenyan Guides- George, Alex and Martin accompanied by a few bottles of bubbles! The long flight was instantly forgotten and we were straight into it. Nairobi was fascinating with a visit to The Giraffe Centre and the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage where the baby orphans entertained and delighted us. We enjoyed a delicious lunch at The Karen Blixon Coffee Garden followed by an informative tour of the Museum which brought back memories of the epic movie " Out of Africa''.
Our safari adventure started on day 3 where we loaded up in our 3 jeeps and headed off via The Rift Valley to Lake Nakuru. We loved the drive and swore never to complain about Australian roads again as we bumped, swerved and sloshed through unsealed tracks and roadways with our skilful drivers. Our first glimpse of zebra was so exciting and it only got better and better. Over the next 7 days in Kenya we hunted down The Big 5 - ( albeit only a glimpse of the elusive leopard) but the rest were in abundance! The pink flamingos on Lake Nakuru were a sight to remember forever. Our knowledgeable and personable guides made the trip a huge success and as for the girls.... Wow! What an amazing group of girls! They embraced everything, had a wonderful sense of adventure and supported each other throughout without question - a joy to witness.
At Lake Victoria, we crossed over into Tanzania and got to know our new guides - Julius, Saluum and Elli who showcased their amazing country. We were wowed by The Ngorongoro Crater and The Serengeti and the abundance of wildlife we saw everywhere we went. Our experiences were enriched by the breathtaking scenery, views, weather and the number of animals we saw daily. Our evenings were spent enjoying delicious local food, enjoying a drink or two( or 3!!) and bonding deeper and deeper within our group.
The people we met along the way were inspirational and humbling in both countries and our final experience at The Children's Garden Home & School Orphanage in Nairobi was a highlight. They are so well cared for and loved by each other and the Moses and Silvia who run the Orphanage. We were entertained by singers, dancers and acrobats and some of the kids shared their stories of their education paths and their journey to where they are now - truly amazing.
