8 Day Norfolk Island Discovery
We flew from Sydney, 2.5 hours across the Pacific Ocean to Norfolk Island, so very remote and tropical. We learned much about the brutal history around the penal colony, the mutineers from the Bounty and Pitcairn Island, some 6,00 kms away.
This, combined with the many local Polynesian people, the culture and language of Norfolk evolved and now embraces the input from all parties. Tourism is the major export, and we indulged in nearly everything the island had to offer.
With fantastic accommodation, we had plenty of space and were surrounded by nature. Towering Norfolk Island pine trees scattered throughout the island and aqua and blue coastlines on the vast ocean set the scene for a very refreshing holiday. We ate delicious local food, dining at all the top restaurants on the island. The freshest fish ever, known as Trumpeter (sweet lip) was on offer everywhere and pasture fed local eggs and seasonal fruit and veg were delicious.
We walked through subtropical forests, out on cliff tops with amazing lookouts, on sandy beaches and we swam and snorkeled and paddled in Emily Bay. We learnt of the history by visiting the old, old cemetery and we opened our minds to the Ghost tour, hearing stories of many haunted occurrences on Norfolk Island. We had high tea at the Governor’s Lodge and visited Colleen McCullough’s home, hearing inside stories of her amazing life.
Such an interesting and relaxing trip! We have all come home feeling refreshed.
